Chapter 12

Her phone rang, echoing through the empty office. Her scream of shock joined the din. Once she managed to get her racing heart back under control, she glanced to see the name on the screen. Margaret. She forced herself to exhale and get herself back in order before answering.

“Silence it the next time you break in somewhere,” she muttered to herself, then laughed at the absurdity. She was still chuckling when she put the phone to her ear.

“Margaret? What’s wrong? Did something happen?”

“Lots has happened,” Margaret said. “Family drama, you know the sort. But first, why did you hang up on me yesterday? I thought we agreed never to do that to one another.”

Carol sighed. “You’re right. Sorry. I just got distracted. You know how it gets sometimes.”

“Where are you right now?”

“I’ve been running some errands,” she said, looking around the empty office. “I’m heading back home now.”

It was only slightly a lie. She had a few things she had to take care of first, but they were on the way to her house.

“All right. Well, I’m glad you picked up. I wanted to tell you what was going on between Denise and Jenna.

“Oh no,” Carol groaned. Denise, her younger niece, and Jenna, one of their cousins’ daughters, had never been known to get along particularly well. “This doesn’t sound like it’s going to bode well.”

“It’s not. Anyway, Jenna and her husband were in town, so we all got together. And you know how Jenna likes to stir the pot. She started pestering Denise about when she and her boyfriend were going to get married, and dropped a few hints about how she and her husband had been married for ages by this point in their relationship. And you know that can be a bit of a sore spot for Denise, even if they are waiting for Kyle to finish up his PhD before getting married.

Carol sighed and rolled her eyes. “So she was trying to get a rise out of Denise?”

“Of course she was! And she got even more annoyed when she realized it wasn’t working. Denise knew immediately what was going on.”

“Jenna just wants the attention,” Carol said. “Tell Denise Aunt Carol says good for her.”

Margaret snorted. “It feels like a rehash of Terri, you know?”

Carol chuckled. “There’s no way I could forget Terri.” Their cousin, Jenna’s mother, had always been cut from a similar cloth, always needing to be first and gloating over it, and getting more annoyed the more she realized Margaret and Carol only had interest in competing against one another.

“I mean, I guess we really shouldn’t be surprised,” Margaret said. “It's not like Terri was ever going to be all that great an influence.”

“No kidding.” Carol looked around, scanning the office she had broken into. Her mouth quirked upward. It seemed Terri wasn’t the only one who might be considered a bad influence at the moment, though maybe in a slightly different way.

“Anyway, I wanted to give you a warning just in case Jenna or Terri called you up and tried to spin it like Denise was the problem,” Margaret said.
